This is a piece from one of Gary Baseman’s solo exhibitions at the Pasadena Museum of California Art. Gary Baseman uses different recurring characters in his pieces to represent human memories and ideas, individual and fleeting. This is an example of illustration because it isn’t created for realism, but it’s unique style tries to convey a message. It provides a different perspective on human issues and experiences. The colors in this piece particularly appealed to me, because blue and pink are typically happy colors, but this piece has a somber tone. The pink person in the center is being comforted by death and everything around him is bleeding out. This piece is very balanced, and I feel like I should use that more in my work. Instead of making something perfectly even on both sides, I can create objects with the same weight on both sides, such as the two bigger figures on the left balanced by the four smaller figures on the right.
